One of our regular entrants, and someone who never fails to impress with his creative application of photographic techniques, is Darren Athersmith from Askam in Furness, Cumbria. Darren describes this shot: “This is a picture of Furness Abbey taken during the hours of darkness whilst I experimented with creative flash. The exposure was 210 seconds and my D300 was mounted on a tripod while I ran around the ruins illuminating them by manually firing my flash, hand held. The surreal looking background is noise pollution from the orange street lights in the distance.” A stunning shot, skilfully executed.

Another regular and highly creative entrant is Gethin Lane of Leeds, West Yorkshire, UK. “It's a photo of water being poured into a wine glass. This picture was taken in the dark, with a single flash fired towards a piece of white paper behind the glass. The flash was the only light source for this photo. The flash's high speed stopped the movement blur, almost like high speed photography.”

One technique that was surprisingly under-represented was the use of flash to freeze action in sports photography, however Mike Anton from Haywards Heath, West Sussex has produced an excellent example. “I was trying some off-camera flash that day but this was taken across the copse with a 580EXII on board. It was a bit hit-or-miss timing and focus wise but this one came out quite well.”
