Another well-lit close-up shot is this attractive photo of a rain-covered spider’s web, shot by Andrew Swan of Rugby, UK, who also entered last month. According to Andrew the shot was:. “Taken with an E3 and Olympus 50mm F2 in daylight using a black background. The FL 50-R flash was positioned at right angles to the spider's web. A small amount of Photoshop to darken the background but in the main it is only cropped from the original shot.”

Sometimes we receive photos about which we know almost nothing, and that is the case with this shot by Bob Stuart of Bow, London, UK. As far as I can tell studying the photo, Bob has used a longer shutter speed, possibly in Night Portrait mode, and somehow rolled the camera during the exposure to produce the swirling pattern of light trails. The slow-sync flash has then frozen the movement of the band, resulting in a unique and dynamic shot.

Although there were a wide variety of techniques used by our entrants, I was surprised to find that two people had sent in very similar photos using the same highly unusual technique. Both regular entrant Lee Myers of Hull, UK and first-time entrant Christofer Cronsioe of Gothenburg, Sweden sent in pictures of flash-illuminated smoke, with their colours inverted using Photoshop, so that black becomes white. Both shots were very good, but we only have room for one, so after much deliberation it was decided that Christofer’s looked slightly better on the page.

What a fantastic group of entries.
(..I'm almost glad I didn't have time to enter this month!)
Well done to all :)

Very pleased that my 'little bee' image deserved a mention. I used my trusty Minolta Dimage A2 and Metz flash. Very impressed with all the images, in particular Kecskes R... more
