With virtually all Sat Navs these days offering relatively comparable hardware specs and tracking performance choice often comes down to the quality and intuitiveness of the onboard software. TomTom has frequently been a winner in this department but relative upstart ViaMichelin is chasing hard...

'Version 7' of its software is for use across ViaMichelin's entire portfolio of GPS devices and offers real value. Breaking with its rivals, the company has made an array of previously chargeable features free including 5-day weather forecasts (updated twice a day), road toll charges, safety camera updates and - for owners of the company's flagship X970-T and X-980T - free traffic alerts.

On top of this a 'Tunnel Mode' has been added which provides automatic adjustments to the brightness of the screen and route simulation in the absence of GPS reception. In truth this brings the products in line with Sony and TomTom who have both offered this feature for some time.

ViaMichelin isn't finished here however, it has also got Alertastic with prompts now available for dangerous bends, schools, roadworks, authorised overtaking areas and tiredness.

In all, some of these introductions provide necessary catch-ups but others push the value of GPS devices to a new level. With ViaMichelin units' starting from just £139 it clearly signals there is a bold and brassy new player in town...
