While TomTom clearly has the GPS world at its feet there was one curiously absent space on its résumé: integrated systems.

Righting this wrong is news today however that the company has signed a deal (the first of many?) with Toyota to install units directly into the dashboard of new Yaris' (Yarises? Yari?).

As the shots show, the method is completely straightforward with TomTom models able to fit directly into the space around the Toyota's vehicle entertainment system. From here it can be controlled either via touchscreen or using the Yaris' radio controls and then popped out whenever it needs to be portable.

Being an embedded solution, this option also enables full audio integration (as do other TomToms just with less visible wires) and voice dialling, spoken instructions and hand-free calls are all offered. Furthermore, customers will get full access to the range of benefits available on standalone TomTom models such as regular map and software updates, (subscription based) traffic updates and access to TomTom Home.

As long as TomTom sticks to the same format factor, customers will also be able to upgrade their GPS units over time. So all good stuff, unless you suddenly decide to switch to Garmin, Navman or Mio after 12 months...
