Software Lets TomToms Play Movies

When I’m blasting down the motorway swearing at old ladies and bullying drivers with green L plates I often think “What I need right now is to simultaneously watch a movie” and Makayama has just made my psychopathic dream come true.

Ok, so I’m exaggerating a little (I only terrorise old male drivers) but if you’ve got one of the uber popular TomTom GO sat nav devices fitted to your car it can now be transformed into a multimedia device to shut up children, wives and/or girlfriends. The breakthrough comes courtesy of a piece of software called Media Studio.

This rather innovative example of coding installs a multimedia player capable of running AVI, Mpeg1, Mpeg4, DivX, Xvid, Vob and Asf files directly onto your TomTom as well as compression software to resize video for the device. Conversion is nippy too with Makayama claiming a DVD can be ripped in less than 45 minutes. From here files can be transferred directly to the TomTom’s memory or played directly from the memory card and given the detachable nature of the device it can also be used outside the car.

For the safety conscious among you (for whom I have only the utmost respect for your patience as I scream past you) a built in feature can disable all video playback when vehicle movement is detected. This kinda destroys the fun of watching Death Race 2000 while trying to loose that pesky police tail though so it can be switched off.

Currently TomTom Go, Go 300, Go 500 and Go 700 models are supported but the One, Rider, 510, 710 and 910 will all be supported later. Windows XP, 2000, NT and Vista os-es are supported and the online download price is 29.95 euros which seems rather reasonable. For those still unsure whether watching TV while driving would greatly benefit their lives a demo version is available. But really, what could go wrong…?
