Canon rates the i-SENSYS MF6180dw at 33ppm and, although this is a sheet-to-sheet speed, we saw something not too far off under our real-world tests. The five-page text print gave 18.8ppm, only slightly faster than half the rated speed, but on the 20-page print this increased to 26.1ppm, a very healthy throughput.
Duplex print is standard on the machine, and the 20-page test printed as 10 duplex pages giving 14.8 sides per minute, again a good result. The five-page text and graphics print, which we would normally expect to be slightly quicker than the text print, was marginally slower here at 16.7ppm.
A single page copy from the flatbed took 7s and a five page copy from the ADF was also quick at 18s. A 10 side duplex copy was comparatively slow, though, at 1:06, because of the three-pass duplex scanning. A 15 x 10cm photo took just 7s and full A4 prints from a USB drive and an iPad took 11s and 9s, respectively.
Text print is light and sharp, giving a very professional finish to pages. Greyscale graphics, however, are hindered by a poor range of shades, so different colours in an original can all come out the same grey shade, making them more difficult to distinguish.
Greyscale copies are also pretty blotchy, not giving a good or smooth feel to graphics. Photo prints, though, are smooth and well textured, though some darker areas can tend to black.
Using the high yield cartridge gives a cost per page of 2.1p, which is low in comparison with many of its competitors. The high capacity of this cartridge also means maintenance costs are low, giving a better than average total cost of ownership.
There’s a lot to be said for this machine, which is quick, versatile and generally easy to use. It compares well with the Kyocera ECOSYS M2030dn and supports wireless connection, which the Kyocera doesn’t.
This is a good, workhorse, small-office multifunction printer. It’s quick, inexpensive to run and offers useful extras, like duplex scan and copy and wireless connection. Greyscale copies could be better, but in general printing and office duties are smoothly handled and we recommend putting the Canon i-SENSYS MF6180dw on your shortlist.
