You may think the love has gone for Standard Definition (SD) camcorders, but at least Samsung is still trying to innovate...

It has come up with the 'MX20', an SD, SD card based (yep, that's a fun acronym car crash right there) portable camcorder which has a large 2.7in LCD, Schneider lens with whopping 34x optical zoom and face recognition technology and nifty recording codec.


Taking a smart (and long overdue) route, the MX20 is the first Standard Definition portable camcorder (that we know of) to use the H.264 codec meaning you'll fit an impressive four, eight or 16 hours of footage onto 8GB, 16GB and 32GB SD cards respectively. Better still Samsung claims the MX20 is good for up to three hours of video recording on a single charge - a figure it believes to be the longest in its class.

Also nifty is the MX20's 'Web & Mobile' mode which automatically adjusts recordings to VGA (640 x320) resolution (AAC/MP4) to make them natively compatible with YouTube while they can be played back on Apple's iPods and iPhones without any need for re-ripping.

Landing initially in Japan next month, the MX20 will come in a choice of black, white, red and blue finishes and - as ever - its global launch will be dependent on its reception. Given however that a bargain basement RRP is also likely this could be one Samsung camcorder which dares to cross the European divide...
