It's always good to see Canon expanding its range with more bite size announcements compared to its past onslaughts...

Consequently dealt to us in an easily digestible state are the 'HG20' and 'HG21' high definition camcorders with highly welcome large 60GB and 120GB HDDs respectively.

You'll need this storage too since the duo are capable of Full HD 1080p (1920 x 1080) recording with a maximum average date rate of 24Mbps - the highest currently available under the AVCHD standard. They also share 3.3MP CMOS sensors capable of 12x optical zoom powered by the DIGIC DV II processor while 'Instant AF' and 'Focus Assist' technology is in there too for fast and smooth, well... focusing.

Another highlight is an overhauled GUI for more intuitive settings adjustment and in camcorder video editing while HDMI and component outputs should mean hooking them up to any HDTV is a snap. What separates the HG21 from the HG20 other than the larger HDD? A multi-angle Vivid LCD screen and Electronic Viewfinder (EVF).

“The HG20 and HG21 represent the next evolution of Canon’s High Definition range,” said Mogens Jensen, Head of Canon Consumer Imaging Europe.

Both Canon’s new HG20 & HG21 HD camcorders will be available from early next month, prices TBA. So if you've ever wanted to torture your friends and relatives with baby/holiday footage that never ends these are the camcorders for you...

...you evil sod.
