Sony may think it knows what small is, but it hasn't been talking to Panasonic...

Scooped by Japan-lovin' site Akihabara, the Panasonic 'SDR-S7' is the smallest, lightest camcorder ever made measuring just 41 x 102 x 59mm and barely tipping the scales at 160g (182g including the battery and SD card). Compare this with the HDR-TG3E: a proportionately fatty 33 x 119 x 63.5mm and 283g.

To be fair, we're not comparing like with like here (or even like with mildly favourable) since the SDR-S7 performs in a vastly different league to the mini-mighty TG3E. Gone is the Full HD playback and the 4MP stills, gone is the 2.7in viewfinder and gone is the HDMI output. Instead, we're in bargain basement land here shooting VGA video in either 16:9 or 4:3 using the bloated Mpeg2 codec.

There's no word on what stills quality you'll get either or just how much juice you'll get out of the battery. That said, for a mere €270 we don't have the right to expect very much at all and there's no doubt that the S7 will cause a stir every time you pull it out your pocket.

A stir, that is, which may swiftly lead to giggles - but who cares. It's the stir we'll focus on...
