Thought the MiniDV sector had about as much life in it as your average dodo? JVC disagrees…

Perhaps targeting the cash-strapped newly wed, less newly parented nuclear family is the 'GR D850', a blobby camcorder packing a sizeable bang for your buck.

A native widescreen shooter, it measures just 68 x 118 x 74mm and weighs less than 500 grams yet still manages to offer a 680,000 pixel CCD, 2.7in screen and voyeur-tastic 35x zoom. Brightness sensitivity isn't bad either working effectively at as low as 12 lux and you'll get a just under two hours continuous usage from the battery.

What really makes the GR D850 stand out however is its price. Retailing at just 45,000¥ when it launches in Japan in January, the model is expected to go for little more than £200 when it hits the UK early next year.

Novices looking to embarrass their young children many years from now could do far worse. Frustrated father's should also relise it will come in handy for recording all anticipated arguments then playing them back to prove who said what to who. That alone is £200 well spent in anyone's opinion.
