Sony Announces High Definition Camcorder

Sony has announced a new camcorder that brings High Definition recording to the consumer market. The HDR-FX1 conforms to the 1080i specification, and can capture moving images made up of 1080 interlaced lines, compared to the 500 lines used by current DV camcorders. The HDR-FX1 camera uses a three chip CCD made up of 1.12 Megapixels (1.07 effective) with a widescreen 16:9 aspect ratio. Triple CCD camcorders provide greater colour accuracy than single chip cameras.

The HDR-FX1 is also fitted with a Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar lens with a 12x optical zoom, which Sony claims reduces chromatic aberration. The camera is also fitted with a 3.5in widescreen preview window.

The HD Camcorder is being aimed at home moviemakers looking for the best picture quality, and also for film editors and journalists.

The HDR-FX1 will be available in the UK from November and will have a recommended selling price of £3000 including VAT
