Runner-up: JVC Everio GZ-HM445

The Everio offers excellent image quality and a degree of control for the user who wants to move beyond point-and-shoot filming for less than £200. A 40x optical zoom and LCD touchscreen meant this packed in many of the features of model twice the price. Lack of versatility meant this was pipped to the post because of a lack of on-board memory and user control, but there were some nice features including smile recognition and a user-configurable option button, which made this a respected competitor in this category.

On the strength of your review, I just bought the Panasonic HDC-SD90. After trying it out I can say that at any price it's an admirable camcorder, but at its price it's amazing.

I bought one of these Everio cameras and where the camera itself is good. The downloading program for it stinks and has been nothing but confusing and problematic. So much so that I'm getting rid of it and looking into some thing more user friendly.
