Best Cheap 42-inch TV

Key features:
  • 42-inch LCD TV with edge LED lighting
  • Full HD resolution
  • Aluminium build
  • SEN smart TV platform
The Sony KDL-42W705B sits in the middle of Sony's 42-inch TV offerings, but while Sony does offer cheaper sets at this size the KDL-42W705B offers the best compromise of features and price.

What first marks this TV out is its premium build, which belies its £449 price. An aluminium frame and stand, with a tiny slim bezel really make this a sharp looking telly.

Next on the hit list is very good picture quality, which is lead by impressive black levels. Dark scenes in films - or just the black bars above and below - look convincingly dark and gloomy. And this is achieved not at the expense of bright, natural colours too.

Connectivity is also excellent with four HDMIs, two USBs, a LAN port and built in Wi-Fi. You also get Sony's latest SEN smart TV platform which offers a slick way to access Netflix, Amazon Instant, the BBC iPlayer, and Sky News. It does miss out on 4oD and iTV player though. Also, 3D isn't an option here.

Price: £449
