The Asus Transformer Book T90 Chi
is an attention-grabber. The 8.9-inch hybrid can be used as a tablet or a laptop, but that’s not the whole story. It’s also super-light, thanks in part to the trackpad-less keyboard dock, which means you can take it anywhere.
As a tablet, it measures just 7.5mm thick and 400g, despite being clad in metal. With the plastic dock attached, these figures rise to 16.5mm and 750g – this essentially makes it one of the lightest laptops you’ll find anywhere. To compare, the 331g iPad mini 3 is an inch smaller and slightly more expensive, and also comes without the keyboard element.
The lack of a trackpad on the T90’s base is both a blessing and a curse. It gives it an aesthetic ‘wow’ factor, but we’re not sure if consumers will be happy having to navigate via the touchscreen and keyboard shortcuts alone when it hits the market in early 2015. That’s not a criticism of the display though. The 8.9-inch, 1,280 x 800 screen has good viewing angles and colour reproduction, while black levels are solid too.
Inside the T90 Chi is an Intel Atom Z3775 processor, which should be more than powerful enough for a device of this type and you’ll be able to boost the 32GB or 64GB of storage through the microSD slot. Price:
