OnePlus One

Originally reviewed by 03 July 2014

£229 SIM-free

Key features:
  • 5.5-inch 1080p IPS LCD screen
  • Android 4.4.2 with CyanogenMod
  • 13-megapixel main camera
One of the most talked about handsets of 2014, the OnePlus One lives up to the hype and is the cheapest high-end smartphone you can buy. Priced at around the same as the Nexus 5, it’s significantly bigger than the competition with a deliberately simple design too.

The 5.5-inch, 1,920 x 1,080 IPS display is sharp and it has all the key connectivity bases covered, like NFC and Bluetooth 4.0. It also packs the same processor found inside the Samsung Galaxy S5 to deliver a polished performance and the battery will comfortably make it through a day.

What truly sets it apart from other Android phones is that it runs on a CyanogenMod version of Google’s mobile operating system, adding comprehensive levels of customisation and numerous themes to play around with.

Its 13-megapixel main camera is good but not class-leading, but the bottom line is that the OnePlus One can give phones that cost over twice as much a real run for their money.
