Sony Xperia Z3 Compact

Key Features:

  • 4.6-inch 720p IPS screen
  • 20-megapixel camera
  • Waterproof and dustproof
  • Two day battery life

The Sony Z3 Compact is simply the finest small Android phone you can buy. About the same size as the iPhone 6, it's 4.6-inch screen is that bit smaller than the 5-inch+ displays of most flagship handsets but you don't lose any of the features.

Okay, so you do have a slightly lower resolution screen. At 720p (720 x 1,280) it is a step down in sharpness from the 1080p (1,080 x 1,920) models that are common for 5-inch phones but at 319ppi its still plenty sharp enough to not look fuzzy of pixellated.

The rest of the handset is at least equal to all those big phones. A 20-megapixel camera is the flagship feature, and very good it is too. It can also shoot 4K video, but like the Z3 it does come with overheating issues in 4K mode.

This phone is also waterproof to 1.5m and completely dustproof too, so not only will it survive a dunk in the bath, it'll do underwater photography too – a physical button for the camera helps in this regard.

Battery life is also exceptional, with this phone easily able to last two days from a single charge.

Quite simply, if you're after a smaller phone and aren't tempted by the iPhone 6, this is the one to get.
