Plus, if you pre-ordered either of Samsung's newest flagship phones, you should find yourself with a free Gear VR thanks to a generous launch deal from the company.

In terms of content, everything can be downloaded from the Samsung Gear VR app, powered by Oculus, which is available free from the Google Play store. You won't be able to play PC games like you can with the Oculus Rift or the Vive, but there's a good mix to get you started.

Originally the store was full to burst with free to play games, but there's now some premium Gear VR content on offer.

Here's our pick of the best Gear VR games and apps that you can get right now.

N.B the Oculus store is currently all in dollars, hence our pricing scheme.

The truth is that these games are 1st gen and you mostly have to convince yourself that they are really good. I'd wait a couple of years because right now, you aren't missing much.

I had the Gear when it first came out. Being with a musician in his room was cool for about 5 minutes. Now a year later, I see this is still one of the top apps, so it appears things haven't progressed that much.

My Samsung phone overheats before I can win a level! You're prompted to remove the phone from the VR Gear -- not to simply stop playing the game, but you must remove the phone from the VR Gear so it can cool off. Then when you plug it back in... you have to start the level over again!

It's hard to believe how horrible the heat issue is, especially for a "consumer" headset.

December 11, 2015, 10:03 pm

Because of the relatively low resolutions (figuratively speaking) of using phones for VR headsets, has anyone ever thought of doing a kind of SLI thing where you would create a headset that could house not one, but two phones, one for each eye and sync the outputs on both screens? Sure you would need two phones, but It would increase the resolution dramatically from what we have now.

December 16, 2015, 4:02 am

"The only thing that really lets it down is the resolution" ...and I remember all the comments "What's the point of having a 4K display?"

December 24, 2015, 9:32 am

Love it, except... My phone overheats way to quickly, also for half of the games you NEED a gamepad which is sold separately, which everywhere you look is sold out. Stupid. Charge extra for the device but include the gamepad or controller or whatever. Also drains phone battery like CRAZY.

You only hear that from the people who are primarily FB, IG and Netflix users. You know, the "power user" iPhone crowd. Apple hasn't invented VR yet in their reality so they have no clue what it is and and for the few who do know what the acronym means, they think it is not yet ready for prime time because they been told by a genius that it isn't quite there yet. This is going to be the 3.5" screen all over again. Or the notification center. Or the 3rd party keyboard.. or the... well I think we all get the point here.

I bought a $6 laptop cooler on Ebay with a 80mm quiet box fan and usb connection(IronTech IT-F1 USB Powered 8"-15" Laptop Notebook 60mm Cooling Fan), drilled air holes in the cover and mounted the fan inside. I use a small usb portable charger/battery for the fan and it works just fine. I haven't overheated since adding this

I saw this, Cirque du Soleil's Zarkana, as a running app on my phone and was wondering what it was...
Tried the VR once since I bought it a month ago, maybe got 25 minutes of use first time before the dreaded please remove warning, using an S6, this happened within 5 minutes of plugging it into a power supply as I noticed it drop from 80-10% in that amount of time. I bought a Moga controller since, charged it up and thinking about a second go at it... With only 1 adjuster for vision it wasn't a very clear experience for me, you would think they would have set them up like a set of binoculars, 1 general 1 specific adjuster for 1 eye so you could actually adjust these. Will look into the comments below about the addition of a fan mounted to the unit. I bought a couple 40mm fans off Amazon to install into DVRs to replace those noisy fans that come with them, so intruders can't just walk up and find them and take them away, they were that noisy, I could hear the fans in them from anywhere in my small house, these replacement fans were so silent you had to be within 5 feet to hear. In doing this I suspect I would have to wear the headset or be forced to hear the far as mounted to my head I am sure I would hear any fan that close...
Anyhow I hadn't even seen the option for this app, game, or whatever it is during that first 30m run using the VR and was concerned on what it was doing on my phone...
Perhaps when they move us to Marshmallow the phone will run more efficiently and the heating problem will go away, unless someone is on M and knows now???

January 18, 2016, 2:09 pm

I don't see how the apps like Netflix would get much attention if you can only use these for 30m at a time, I don't go there to watch short flix...
Is this only with the S6 or do the other phones overheat as well?

January 27, 2016, 8:52 pm

Samsung Gear VR requested on my new Samsung Galaxy 6 Edge Plus to be installed. I figured why not. Now it is waking me up at night, saying "remove your mobile device and install the app" I just tried to uninstall and my phone is going crazy, entire screen is black with a small x on the lower right and nothing else will work. Just keeps turning on, asking for more stuff, then shuts off. WTF?

Just ordered this with the S7. Can't wait.

I have Note 5, i just played some Shootout game for last 3.5 hours or my battery went down from 74% to 10%... although the phone does heat up... but nothing major, it heats up when taking long videos too... but not too much... though the memory space is a concern, my phone went from 65% to 90% by just installing the VR apps.

I've just got a Gear VR with an S6 and things like netflix dont overheat the phone, only the more intensive stuff does, apparently it effects all phones for gear vr but as the Note 5 is larger it has more space to dissipate the heat so happens less frequently. Also I get much more life out of my battery than the OP. I reckon I can get about 3 to 4 hours use from a full battery. 80% to 10% battery in 25 minutes sounds insane.

You can use any bluetooth gamepad as long as it's designed for android.
I use a £20 one that's almost identical to a xbox 360 controller.

Have you got a bluetooth controller to go with it? You'll need one for a lot of the games. I use the one in the link. Nice and cheap and your phone can clip into it when not using Gear VR to make a nice handheld console.

Samsung Internet is going to be awesome with porn.

just tried. the problem is that it is a very basic browser, there is no way to clear the history

Basic like ps4? Or worse? Is there is a way to access a plex media server though the browser and will it play html5? Pretty much all I would use the browser for.

You can use a wired ps4 controller on s6 edge plus. Works great. Wirless would be choice though

It seems the android base browser, but you have just the address bar where you 'spell' the website nothing more
