Key features:

  • 5-inch, 1,280 x 720 IPS display
  • Impressive 8-megapixel camera
  • Two-day battery life
  • 4G
The Microsoft Lumia 640 is a great cheap smartphone that showcases the best of Microsoft’s productivity tools. It comes with a free one-year subscription to Microsoft Office 365 Personal worth £59.99, and will receive the Windows 10 update when it arrives.

Clad in a glossy plastic case, it’s tough, well-made and instantly recognisable as a Lumia. It’s also equipped with a 5-inch, 1,280 x 720 IPS display that we’d be impressed with on a phone costing twice the price.

Inside is a 1.2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 quad-core processor, which comes paired with 1GB of RAM. It’s a powerful enough arrangement for handling 3D games, and the 2,550mAh battery can go for two days between charges. The cherry on top is the 8-megapixel main camera, which captures excellent images.

Price: £10.50 a month or £170 SIM-free / $239.99
