Am I right in thinking there is no modem inside? Does that mean I still need to run the ISP modem-router alongside it?
Yes there's no modem inside so you'd need the modem router (though disable its WiFi to avoid interference. There is a modem version for 199.99
i thoroughly disagree with the review. Coverage is below average, even on the 5 Ghz band. Transfer speeds are poor, on both bands, and finally Belkin doesn't care. Finally, this device is impossible to use as an access point or repeater. When used as an access point, you cannot accces it via IP and it won't forward DHCP requests. Useless!
Finally, there is a version 1 and a version 2 of this product. I, unfortunately, have version 1. Belkin has given up on updating the firmware (meaning it's essentially being bricked). Belkin couldn't care less.
Be aware that Belkin no longer supports OSX drivers for its printer and storage manager software. Which in short means machines running OSX 10.8 or higher can't access network printers or storage backup disks... Bit of a shock to us after choosing what we thought was a fully compatible OSX network device
