Call of Duty: Black Ops 3’s campaign comes with some big changes

All campaign missions will be unlocked from the beginning in Call of Duty: Black Ops 3, Treyarch has announced.

Treyarch are set to do things a little differently with this year’s Call of Duty campaign, making all story missions available from the outset.

This means you could play the final mission straight away if you wanted, bypassing the rest of campaign altogether.

Campaign and Zombies director Jason Blundell told Eurogamer that this decision was made to give players more choice:

“The unlocking level system is an archaic mentality we’ve had since we did bedroom development back in the day – you do this, then go on to the next one.”

“Consumers and game players in general are far more mature these days. There are so many things vying for our interests today. It’s about, how do they want to consume it?

“Maybe they put it down on level two, and then they’re in work the next day, and some guy says, ‘dude, you’ve got to check out level four!’ And he’s like, ‘okay, I’ll have a quick look.’ That’s totally fine. I think it’s their choice.”

Some people are concerned that this could result in immediate spoilers for the campaign, however Blundell doesn’t see this as an issue.

He made a direct comparison with House of Cards, a political thriller exclusive to Netflix (it’s awesome by the way).

Netflix rolls out its original programming with entire seasons at a time, but that doesn’t mean everything is going to be spoilt the second people get their hands on it.

“If you see the end you’ll say, I need to understand this more,” Blundell said.

“When Netflix release House of Cards and do all the episodes, does everyone just jump to the end and go and play the last episode? Sure you can. But it’s about the journey, though, right?

“Sure, people will jump on and play the last level. Okay. Cool. That’s up to them.

“The way the story is constructed, it’s more than just the end moment. I’m sure there are many films and other media types where you could read the last page, or see the last minutes, but really you’ve got to experience all of the other stuff to truly enjoy it.”

This is an interesting and progressive step for the Call of Duty franchise to take, especially when some players overlook the single player portion of the game completely.

It was recently announced that the PS3 and 360 versions of Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 will ship without any singleplayer, and will cost less as a result.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 will launch for PS4, PS3, Xbox One, Xbox 360 and PC on November 6, 2015.
