"This seems a recipe for bug-heaven, as neither Android nor Windows 8
will like having its core spec suddenly shifted from Tegra 3 to an Intel
chip (and Android won't simply work with x86 chips anyway)"

It doesn't work quite like that. The Intel chip runs Windows 8 and the Tegra chip runs Android; that doesn't change no matter what.

The clever bit is that you can switch between Android and Windows 8 even when the tablet's undocked. According to a combination of Anandtech and Dailytech it does this using Splashtop over Wi-fi Direct.

Btw Android does run on x86; Intel ported it some time ago and there are one or two phones on the market using x86 chips and Android. However on this Asus it's the ARM version of Android and the x86 (or rather x64) version of Windows; the best of both.

Ah ha Asus didn't mention the Wi-Fi Direct mechanic. That explains a lot - and is verrrry clever! I do think anyone saying Android works on x86 is a bit of an overstatement, though. I did look up the port up before writing this actually - I had a feeling someone might call me up on it :) Eagle eyes!

Yes it's a very nice idea, and takes us that bit closer to the future of personal computing (as I see it at least). If it had a higher resolution, Tegra 4 and Wacom stylus I'd be very tempted.

As for the port, well it seems to work pretty well on the Razr i: http://www.trustedreviews.c...

Not compatible with all Play Store apps though; I read that there's a compatibility layer to resolve that but I haven't looked into it as the phone's a bit mid-range for my tastes.

Is Jelly Bean the reason for the incompatibility with Play Store apps? I was just curious because Im planning to buy one.

Don't worry; I was just correcting the reviewer's statement. There's no incompatibility to worry about.

The only incompatibility you may find is that not all apps will run on a 1080p tablet. Other than that the Android hardware is pretty standard.
