Here's a pleasant turn up for the books following the sadness which built in us during the rather curtailed iPhone 3G launch last night: O2's gone and got ultra competitive with the pricing...

Choosing to dispel our rip-off Britain tag for once, O2 is pushing ahead with deals that will see not only the 8GB iPhone 3G free with contract, but also the 16GBer too. It all works out as follows:

8GB iPhone 3G
£99 on £30 & £35pm 18 month contracts
Free on £45pm and £75pm 18 contracts

16GB iPhone 3G
£159 on £30 and £35pm 18 month contracts
£59 on £45pm 18 month contract
Free on £75pm 18 month contract

Package Allowances
£30pm - 75 mins, 125 texts (eeek)
£35pm - 600 mins, 500 texts (a clear sweet spot)
£45pm - 1,200 mins, 500 texts
£75pm - 3,000 mins, 500 texts

All deals come with unlimited data browsing over O2's HSDPA network and unlimited access to 9,500 Wi-Fi hotspots through both The Cloud and now BT Openzone. Yes, it isn't half bad with the £35pm and £45pm 16GB iPhone deals the best deals in my opinion.

Vitally O2 has confirmed existing iPhone customers can upgrade to the iPhone 3G for free. In its own words:

To thank you for being an iPhone fan, we're offering you an early upgrade to the brand new version when it launches on 11th July 2008. You won't have to wait until the end of your existing contract either, all you'll need to do is agree to a new 18-month minimum term contract.

Best of all, the new 8GB iPhone won't cost you a penny on our £45 and £75 tariffs. And it's just £99 on our £35 tariff and new £30 tariff. This special early upgrade offer is only available online at o2.co.uk anytime from 11th July until 11th October 2008.

Interestingly, both the 8GB and 16GB iPhone 3G will also be available for O2 PAYG customers with pricing to be confirmed in the coming weeks. Expect something in and around the £269 original iPhone launch price.

Feeling a little more positive? Yeah, me too…

Note: All original EDGE iPhones are off the market and not coming back (even at even lower prices) so you'll have to knock that idea on the head.

Why didn't you properly pounce on the new £30ppm tariff?
When you look down the scale of the tariffs, the £30 sticks out like sore thumb. Pay an extra fiver a month and... more

And now spare a moment for our fallen comrade - the iPod Touch. As always it was the black sheep in the family (though not always reaching the levels of black we would have liked).... more

Errrr D-Unit, it ISN'T more than £102. In fact the most you can pay for an 8GB iPhone 3G is £99. Think you're a little mixed up ;)

it should be £99 WITHOUT a contract, on PAYG....only then would I consider one of these nasty slabs!
