It didn't take long to pop the rumour cherry in 3G iPhone week...

With just 7 days to go before Steve Job's opening WWDC keynote worthy broadsheet The Times reports that generation 2.0 will appear as early as July on UK shelves with a subsidised price as low as £100. Quoting 'a source close to the deal' the paper claims the US will still get the 3G iPhone first, but only by a matter of days or weeks rather than the three months endured first time around.

It isn't all cake and puppies though, the same source suggests that other European countries could get the 3G iPhone for just €99 where there is no network exclusivity. By contrast it claims O2's exclusive deal with Apple in the UK is not limited to the original iPhone and the lack of competition will ensure prices aren't so generous.

That said, the news represents a major set forward compared to the £269 RRP on its 8GB successor and should give Apple a big boost with its ambitious attempts to shift 10m iPhones by the end of 2008.

Apple's most loyal UK supporters who bought the handset on launch in November will be hoping O2 and its Telefonia Europe CEO Matthew Key (above) come up with some form of reward as they currently stand just seven months into their 18 month contracts...
