Have we been too quick in dismissing the iPhone SDK? Despite no formal announcement yesterday (and March fast approaching), Apple last night slid out firmware 1.1.4 for both the iPhone and iPod touch.

Perhaps the most intriguing thing about this update is that once installed it appears to do nothing. That's right, not a single superficial or functional change in sight - so is this firmware simply laying the foundations for you know what.

For the record, Apple says the 162.1MB patch "fixes bugs and supersedes all previous versions" - thanks for the resounding clarity. There have also been no detailed release notes as yet.

Interestingly, 1.1.4 also appears to be easily hackable (so it's not for that) with reports already filtering through that the existing, previously-all-encompassing ZiPhone unlock works a treat. This despite the author urging users "DO NOT UPGRADE TO 1.1.4, ZiPhone will work with 1.1.4. But I need to FULLY test it and do a few adjustments." He has also posted the key.

Point to ponder: could this lax-security be a sign Apple is finally embracing all the unlockers out there? After all it could be argued their efforts have lead to far more iPhone sales than there would have been otherwise. Of course Apple can't officially condone it, but it can offer little resistance as 1.1.4 appears to do.

Stay tuned, I'm sure there will be a lot more soon...
