We've seen similar technology used to transfer files between memory keys without a PC, but this takes things to a whole new level...

The 'miShare' is making waves across the web right now because it allows users to connect their iPods together and swap music, videos, photos and even any data held by the players in 'disk mode'.

How it works is fairly straightforward too: miShare is a Linux-based conduit with source and destination ports. Plug the appropriate iPod into each end and a light will blink beside each, going solid green once ready. From here a single press of the central button will transfer the last played song, while holding that button for more than three seconds will transfer an entire 'On the Go' selected playlist.

To move videos the process requires some forward planning since a playlist of videos must first be created on iTunes called 'miShare Videos', while a 'miShare Photos' playlist can be used not only to transfer photos but any type of file stored inside it when the iPod is set to storage disk mode.

Now for the caveats: since disk mode isn't available on the iPhone it will not work with that while 3rd generation (fatty) nanos and the iPod touch are off limits too. Furthermore, DRM laced tracks won't copy and data transfer rates work at just 500Kbps meaning it will take around two minutes per album.

On the plus side, this is just v1.0 of the device and many of these obstacles are expected to be overcome in later versions. In addition, the asking price is just $99.95 (under £50) making it a veritable bargain. First retail units will arrive in time for Christmas with miShare taking pre-orders now.
