iPhone is off again

The release of Apple's much-rumoured iPhone has been on and off more often than Paris Hilton and Stavros Niarchos. Whilst Niarchos is rumoured to be stepping back from a potential engagement to the most talked about celebrity of all time, it seems that Apple's Steve Jobs could also be stepping back from the release of the most talked about mobile phone of all time.

No doubt Hilton, a big fan of T-Mobile's sidekick (for better or for worse) would be a big fan of the iPhone, were it to appear in its rumoured state. Kevin Rose, popular founder of Digg.com, said last week that the phone would appear at MacWorld.

(This is Apple's annual January jaunt in snowy San Fran, which this year takes place at the same time as CES, to the annoyance of the tech press.)

He quoted a reliable source as saying that the device has two batteries - one to power music playback and one for phone functions - as well as a slide out keyboard. He suggests it will be available in 4GB and 8GB capacities.

Now, a reporter for the Sydney Morning Herald says that the phone has been delayed, and that Steve Jobs has pulled back from the brink of its release for some unknown reason. That is, of course, if it was ever scheduled to be released in the first place. A cynical soul might suggest that anyone can say anything about the iPhone and guarantee a high profile reception from the Apple-loving blogosphere, but a rumoured delay to a rumoured release of a rumoured device is probably scraping the barrel.

Thanks goodness for the sanity of folks such as Michael Gartenberg, an analyst at Jupiter Research, who was quoted yesterday as saying that the iPhone speculation is "Starting to get out of hand".

Much like the antics of Paris Hilton, then.
