Our Score:

Amazon Kindle Fire HDX 7 - Battery life

Amazon claims you should get an 11 hour battery life if you are doing a mix of reading, browsing the web, watching video and listening to music. If you are planning to just read you can expect to get 17 hours out of it.

In the real world you can comfortably get a couple of days use before having to charge it up again if you're just browsing and reading. Throw in some Netflix streaming and gaming and things invariably will drastically change. It will still get you through a day’s play.

In more extreme testing conditions, running the Hobbit through Netflix on loop with 50% brightness manages on average 7 hours which doesn’t really beat the competition, but it doesn’t fail in comparison.

Should I buy the Amazon Kindle Fire HDX 7?

If you are fully plugged into the Amazon ecosystem and you are looking for a 7-inch tablet to buy that’s not an iPad mini 2 Retina, then the Kindle Fire HDX 7 at £199 is a great choice. It’s really easy to use and Mayday is a killer feature for those who struggle a little with tech.

It might not offer the customization capabilities the Nexus 7 (£199) running on an unskinned version of Android can, but it matches the Nexus tablet in most departments and beats it hands down in terms of speaker quality and battery life. The big concession though is the app store and the lack of Google Play support.

If apps aren't your thing and you want to use a tablet primarily as an eReader, web-browser and video player then the Kindle Fire HDX 7 is a vast improvement on its predecessor, and is great value.

The Amazon Kindle Fire HDX 7 is a great, easy to use 7-inch tablet with some exciting and unique features you won’t find on other Android tablets. It’s just a shame about the app support.

I get about 5 hours of use just reading and that's with the screen turned down as far as it will go and still be readable. The 11 hour mixed use claim is pure b.s. as is Amazon's claim that the ugly purple haze around the screen borders is a design benefit.

To achieve the perfect color accuracy on Kindle Fire HDX 7" at the lowest possible battery consumption and device weight, we used blue, not white, LEDs. Blue LEDs allow for a much more accurate and rich representation of color and result in an up to 20% improvement in power efficiency.

I do not care much about games and other apps, so this sounds great and I will be purchasing soon.
