I at one time owned a solid ink product and used it for several years. I think they are great.

But there are down sides to the Xerox product that most sales people and reviewers do not mention.

1) The product every so often go’s through a cleaning cycle and when doing so it uses up some ink even if you are not using the product. So the cost per page go’s up over time.

2) You have to leave the product on 24 / 7. If the power is turned off or cut off the unit go’s through a purge cycle and even more ink is used. If you have power issue the cost per page can double or more.

3) If you have to move the unit, after powering it down you have to let the unit set for about a half hour. If you move it before then the liquefied ink may spill inside the unit and damage the unit.

Just a few things to consider before you buy a solid ink product

In order af seriousness I would place the down sides mentioned by Jay (Sept. 9) as follows: 2, 3 and 1. As the quality of color prints and the cost per page is a rather important issue for me, I seriously considered buying a Xerox Phaser 8560, despite of the initial costs. But now I will wait a while as the "collateral damage" seems less acceptable than the profits.

I just wanted to address Jay's 3 concerns. I sale this equipment and run into the objections all the time.

1. 90% of my customers are on a Coper Per Copy and Xerox does not charge you for the cleaing pages, thus your cost per page does not increase. Xerox also does not charge for prints ran during a service call like other companies.

2. All Solid Ink machines are Energy Star, they use less power than i takes to make a pot of coffee in sleep mode. If you unplug the machine it will go through the cleaing process and takes longer to warm up, the machine assumes when it is unplugged or turned off that you have moved it, it cleans itself to prevent problems later.

3. 99% of people have never moved their printers since the day they installed them. It is a wax based unit that requires hot melted wax to make prints. The wax must be dry in order to move the unit to prevent it from being spilled all over the machine and damaging parts of the machine or your floor.

A lot of the objections that I get on Solid Ink machines are myths put out by our compeditors to discurage customers from buying a suporior product that the competition does not have access to and can not perfect.

Thanks for your time.
