The T-Mobile Pulse is one of the most exciting handsets to come through our office in quite some time. Yes, it lacks the glamour of the iPhone, has a poor camera and slightly peculiar headphone setup, and falls behind many premium phones for build quality, but with Wi-Fi, 3G, a microSD slot, and a large high-quality screen, it has all the essentials for a modern smartphone. Add in the superb user experience brought about by Google's Android operating system and a very competitive price of £180 Pay-As-You-Go and we can see many people snapping one of these up.Read full review
At this price point, if you're after an Android device, it's perfect. The feature set beats that of similarly priced competitors (it's usually GPS OR 3G at this price point) which makes it ultimately attractive.
The lack of compass shouldn't deter anyone, in my opinion. We all know to expect a half-baked sat-nav system when it's situated in a device to be used primarily as a phone. (Not to mention the data charges on PAYG!) That's what you have a separate sat-nav unit for anyway!
The only thing stopping me from going out to buy one now is the fact that's it's only on T-Mobile: they're not exactly praised for their marvellous coverage where I live! Unlike Vodafone on the other hand, who are fantastic (because of their excellent freedom packs as well as the coverage!). I think if Vodafone brought out something similar with an inclusive data package to cover the inevitable 3G addiction caused by such a device, they'd be onto a winner. Until then, I'll save for the Blackberry Storm, thanks!
Like I say, the main reason to have a compass on a phone isn't sat-nav, it's augmented reality. Android's the go-to platform for AR right now and this is the first Android handset that won't support it.
I think this is amaing for the price. It really doesn't skimp on any important features. My Hero has a compass and aside from trying it out for 10 mins when I got the phone I haven't touched it. Not really interested in AR. Downloaded Layar off the market but haven't looked at it yet. Be interesting to see how it compares to the HTC Tattoo.
Engadget's just put up their review, and they say the handset's capacitive and has a compass. You might want to check into those two things. Also their camera's no better than yours, which is a shame, but I'm totally getting one if Engadget's right about the screen and compass.
