Very useful, but not without limitations
11th August 2011, By TomH
- Lots of useful features
- Faster than sketch up
- Good results
- It is not going to teach you to design a house
- A few bugs
- Need to put time in to make it work
For the £200 version, you get something that should allow you to design and visualise a complete house. As mentioned in the review the interface is a little counter intuitive and has some bugs. For example disabling "snap to" reliably and for any length of time seems tricky, also the roofing is both simplistic but difficult to get right. Many of the problems are down to the default settings in the many menus. Also the help file is not brilliant.
As a result the software is pretty gimmicky unless you are really prepared to put the hours in.
I note that some of the previous reviewers are architects and I think that they would be a bit afraid of software like this. If it was a bit easier to use, more fully featured and with more reference to building regs it would take a lot of business off them, so they are unlikely to be very supportive.
With reference to sketch up, this software is more limited, but is probably easier to get further faster than starting with the very blank canvas of sketch up. I have certainly found this to be the case.
