After having 3 machines, and after lots of communication IF we were to buy an other one we would have to wait till July. But all the machines have had problems with loading/back up/freezing/and they only correspond by email.

  • Can be used as a head unit (i.e. connected to external amplifier)
  • Compresses stored music when idle
  • Auto switch off when not in use
  • Very quiet in operation
  • Quick search facility
  • Ability to select level of compression
  • Good sound quality
  • Wish they would make the faceplate interchangeable and in different colours
  • Runs very hot in confined space
  • Backup to external HDD very slow

At the beginning let me state that I have three JB7's - that should tell you how impressed I am with them. One is connected to a Linn Classik Movie / Charrio loudspeakers for easy background listening, and the other two are in different rooms operating as stand alone units connected to JBL and Monitor Audio bookshelf loudspeakers. In order to preserve the best possible sound quality I always rip in uncompressed mode. OK, I also have a Linn LP12 / Naim tri-amp / Isobarik system and no way is the Brennan going to beat that in terms of sound quality. But that is missing the point. In terms of sheer convenience, as an easy-to-use product, one that is great fun, the Brennan simply cannot be beaten. Even my 4 year-old son plays the music stored on it. In time people will recognize the JB7 for what it really is - the Dyson of hi-fi.

  • Customer service dire.

I agonised over purchasing the JB7 and finally after reading reviews and weighing evidence took the plunge. After a two week wait my Metallic (silver) 320GB JB7 turned up damaged and with profuse apologies was collected the next day. A replacement was ordered and a week later the new unit arrived in the wrong colour, they sent the BLUE one in error. I rang customer service and when it became clear that I was an inconvenience and no apology was going to be forthcoming I cancelled my order. I then received the veiled threat that a refund would only be processed if the unit was in perfect condition. I received it at 13.30 hrs and it was scheduled for collection (by ParcelForce) two hours later, so I wasn't sure how much damage they thought I was going to do! The JB7 might be good, but their customer service and attention to detail was lousy. A nearly £500 purchase in a recession warrants better service than they were obviously prepared to give. I would NOT recommend buying a Brennan.
