on page 3 you stated it has an ati 5650 and in the feature table its 5850.

I assume its the ati 5650 as the 5850 would have much better gaming performance.

Other than that good review guys keep it up

"Despite relying on simple stereo speakers with no assistance from a supplementary 'sub'..."

Is the subwoofer not found at the rear of the machine? Near the screen hinges, where it is written 'TUBA'? That's what those two blue 'ports' are there for. It's basically the same sound setup as used by the now dated 69xx series.

Thanks to those who spotted the typo on the feature table. It is indeed a 5650 as stated in the review.

@Matt: You're half right. The 'TUBA' is supposed to enhance bass response, but there's no actual separate sub speaker, juts the stereo ones.

I was writing a small review and aparently Windows 7 flipped. Here we go again.

I baught this Acer 5940G since the "old" ( 3 years ) Acer 5920G died. About all hardware units always had problems - I used an obsene amount of time to install XP on it to make it perform.

User review Acer 5940G

Display etc:

Screen is glossy and very reflektive - you see your self in the picture all the time - my use is for a desktop replacement with external monitor, so no problem - but if you intend to use this daily, no need to waste your time in reading further - AVOID !

After 20 years, having an external monitor the VGA cable loses the grip for a sec and the unit is again running on the build in monitor - the external is black - you need to reconfiguer the external monitor again - after 2o years they havnt solved this problem !

Heat and noise:

Pleasent surprice, the unit runs very quiet and relatively cool. The fan hasnt kicked up a single time like the 5920G did frequently - sounded like a jet. I suppose only a fanless can do it more quite - very good.

Performance - Windows 7 64 bit.

First the possitive suprice - after booting and connecting the LAN cable, Windows 7 actually figured out that I intended to connect to the internet - a small pop up and I was on the internet - but it took Microsoft 20 years to get this far. Vista couldnt handle unplugging and plugging the LAN cable.

I realy looked forward to this i7 with 4 processors, turbomeory, 4GB of RAM, 64 bit Windos 7 and all the other wissels . but the realy bad news is, that this machine is slow - lots of waiting time, tasks involving Windowes takes secons, sometimes 10´s of seconds - on a clean install. Nothing has really changed fro Vista - it may well be the final for Windows - I´m no MAC fan, never had one, all my applications are for Windows, CodeGear C++ Builder 2007 etc. This must then be it - who will tollerate waiting times of seconds for simple tasks ? Users will begin to seek new roads. XP is too old now - which reatail user will buy a new fancy notebook with and old fashioned UI ?

Data chrunsing is fair - compiling an application took 2 minutes and 40 secs on this machine, and 6 minutes and 40 secs on the backup MSI WIND 100 Atom 1,6 GHz processor, 3GB RA and XP. Hmmm, seems like the four processors arnt really performing here - battery save utton is off - hmmm - I think the old dead 5920G was same or perhaps a bit faster ?

Anyway - I will not write further, since it realy makes no sence, now its a question of save where save can be saved - to find a way to put XP on this machine - find drivers etc - and I may be back with a continuation to this review.

Any PC / laptop with Windows Vista or Windows 7 -- AVOID !

So what do we do now - us with tons of applications made for Windows ? We have to continue with XP - waiting for some one else to solve the problem of suppling a x86 OS which is moderne, compact and fast.
